*Because of the short week next week, we will not be sending a Friday newsletter on 11/26*Lost and Found
Our lost and found is overflowing! Despite our best efforts to get items home to the rightful place, we still have a large assortment of items sitting here waiting to be claimed. Items will be set out for view at conferences. Anything left by Thanksgiving break will be donated to charity.
The number one way you can help us reunite items with students are to label your garments with your student's first name and initial of last name. When we find items with names, we make sure to get them back to them ASAP.Highly Capable Program Referral Window
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District defines highly capable students as those who demonstrate, or have the potential to demonstrate, outstanding levels of aptitude (defined as exceptional ability to reason and learn). We recognize and embrace the development of highly capable students and their use and possession of untrained, natural ability. Do you know a child who performs at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with other students of the same age? If so, consider referring them for Highly Capable services.Referrals
The referral window will be open from Monday, Nov. 22, 2021 until Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021. Learn more about the referral process and access forms.
Note: Second grade students will participate in a Highly Capable Universal Screener the second week of November and therefore do not need to be referred to be considered for services.Food Drive
On Friday, November 12, we started a canned food drive at LRE that will benefit The Market, (Bonney Lake Food Bank). This drive is part of the Mayor’s Food Drive through the city of Bonney Lake. I am pleased to share that all Bonney Lake area elementary schools are participating!Yearbooks Are On Sale
Yearbooks are on sale! $18 until January 2nd. Price will go up to $20 until May 21st. Forms were sent home, you can send it the form (checks payable to LRE PTO) or you may order online at buytheyearbook.com.

November Character Trait
This month we're talking about gratitude! The dictionary defines it as "the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness." The definition we are using at the school is: "Choosing to notice and appreciate things in our life, things in others, and things in the world"
We want to make sure we share with students that Gratitude is 1) a choice that we get to make over and over again on where we put our focus and 2) doesn’t always have to be about something positive. We can feel grateful even for tough or challenging things in our life! There is plenty of research that shows a strong connection between Gratitude and reduced anxiety, increased happiness, and better relationships. Over the course of the month, we will talk about amazing people who demonstrate Gratitude in various ways. We will talk about what we are grateful for in ourselves and in others. And we will even find Gratitude in some things we wouldn’t expect to be thankful for!Thanksgiving Meals

Principal Update: 10/15/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/15/2021
This week we continued to focus on the character trait of Respect. I am proud of our Thunder Eagles and the many acts of Respect they are showing each day! Some examples I noticed this week were:
-
Fifth grade students helping younger students in the bus line.
-
Students helping our custodians collect recycle bins.
-
Students walking respectfully through hallways to make sure other students can learn.
-
Thunder Eagles being especially respectful at recess by following SOAR expectations.
This weekend please take a moment to ask your child how they showed Respect at school this week!
Sincerely,
Julana Hardtke

Principal Update: 10/8/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/8/2021
As many of you know we traditionally complete state testing with our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in the spring. Because of distance and hybrid learning last year we did not complete those assessments. This fall our 4th and 5th grade students will be completing portions of the state test that they were unable to complete last spring. Please see below for detailed information and reach out to me if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!
State Testing begins October 20th
In the state of Washington, students take state and federal tests such as the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). School districts use results from these tests to measure student learning as well as the progress of the educational system as a whole. Due to the pandemic and sudden school closures in Spring 2020, tests were waived in every state across the country. As a result, state tests will look different this year. One difference will be that this fall Sumner-Bonney Lake students will participate in the state tests they missed last spring (see chart below). Students will also test again in the spring.
The fall state test will have significantly fewer questions and will measure last year’s grade level standards (for example, 5th grade students will take 4th grade tests in the fall). In the spring, students will take grade level tests.

Principal Update: 10/1/21
Posted by SBLSD on 10/1/2021
Happy October! This month we’re talking about the character trait of Respect. The dictionary defines it as the value of admiring another person for who they are and what they do. The definition we are using at school is:
We are also talking about Respect in the context of using good manners, not using inappropriate or offensive language, being courteous to one another, resolving conflicts peacefully, and treating one another as we would want to be treated (and how they want to be treated!).
Below are some conversation starters and questions you can ask your child when talking about the trait of Respect:
Conversation starters
-
Talk with your child about what it means to be respectful, to be courteous and to use their manners, to solve conflict peacefully, and what it means to treat others the way they want to be treated.
-
Talk about a time you felt disrespected and what you did about it in a way that demonstrated Respect.
-
The core value of Respect invites us to celebrate differences, offering us a beautiful opportunity to work with our children to break down stereotypes. Ask what they think of when they think about grandparents, for example. Expect answers like “they’re old, they’re slow, they’re forgetful, they’re nice, they’re understanding, they’re generous.” Let them share without judgement, to get all of their thoughts out. Then have a conversation about how these are stereotypes that may or may not be accurate for all grandparents and why thinking about people as individuals instead of in groups can be an exercise in Respect.
-
If Respect means making others see good in people and making people feel cared for, how do we already show Respect at home? How can we do a better job showing Respect as both kids and adults?
Questions you could ask
-
What do “good manners” look like in our family? How does using good manners show Respect?
-
How does it feel to be respected? How does it feel to be disrespected? Who are the most respectful people you know?
-
Is it easier or harder to Respect someone who is very different from us? Why?
-
What do I do that makes you feel respected? How else does that make you feel?
Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,
Julana Hardtke
Parent Drop Off/Pick Up:
Staff is working hard to improve the parent drop off and pick up process every day. Parents and families can help us speed up the process as well. When you are at home, please have your child practice getting in and out of their seat and buckling themselves. If kids can start buckling themselves in it will make things go faster, once your child is able to buckle themselves, we ask that parents stay in the car. This will help us to be more efficient and safe.
Covid 19 Communication
The SBLSD will begin sending communication home to families anytime there has been a case of Covid 19 identified in the school. Please do not let this communication alarm you, if your child happens to be in close contact with a Covid 19 positive individual we will contact you separately.
It is vital to the success of our students that you keep your child home when sick. If a student is noted to be ill at school their guardian will be notified and the student will need to be promptly picked up.
Keep your child home when:
-
There has a close contact with anyone confirmed to have, or suspected to have COVID-19

Principal Update: 9/24/21
Posted by SBLSD on 9/24/2021
Each week our arrival and dismissal process is getting a little smoother. Thanks so much for your patience. A few ideas that will help us to speed up the process are:
-
Start a neighborhood carpool, we have a few families doing this and they have all student numbers hanging on their rearview mirror so we call all of the kids they are picking up at once. This is a great way to cut down on traffic.
-
In the morning please make sure your child/children are ready to get out of the car as soon as the door is opened. Coats and masks on and backpacks ready to go. This will help us keep our line moving.
Thank you for your help with this process!
Next week our students will begin taking some beginning of the year assessments in reading. These will be extremely helpful in our planning for instruction moving forward. Students will be completing beginning of year math assessments the following week.
Sincerely,
Julana HardtkeTip of the Week
Please label all waterbottles, jackets, lunchboxes and hoodies with your child's name!
This way we can get them back to their rightful owners when they are left on the playground, bus or wherever else they may be found!

Arrival and Dimissal Reminders
- Please make sure students have masks on and backpacks in laps ready to get out of thier car as soon as doors are opened.
- You may have noticed our new and improved backpack tags. We now have tags that are color coded by bus route, the tags also include the student's family number and a barcode that will be scanned when students get breakfast. Even if your student is normally scheduled for pick up, the tag color corresponds with the route that would take them home should the need arise.
Information from PTO
We are going to start having 2 spirit days each week on Monday and Friday, this will be a fun way to celebrate the beginning and end of our week. LRE spirit wear (or school colors) every Monday and Seahawks or Sports Gear (or the colors of your favorite team) every Friday.
PTO currently has an LRE Spirit Wear Store. The link is below and the passcode is SPIRIT.

Principal Update: 9/10/21
Posted by SBLSD on 9/10/2021
We had a great first week of school at LRE! Students spent time in class learning about our SOAR expectations (S-safe choices, O-ownership of actions, A-achieve excellence, R-respectful behavior) this week, they also did many team building activities with their teachers getting prepared for a great year ahead. This week we also introduced our September character trait of Kindness. The dictionary defines it as: “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” But it is so much more than that! The definition we are using in school is:
Kindness: the choice to act with words, gifts, or actions to bring appreciation, positivity, and encouragement to others and yourself.
The key part of this definition? Kindness is a choice that we get to make every day to bring good things into our lives and the world. Those good things can look like more than just some kind words; Kindness is given through our actions and our encouragement and our attitude and our gifts. We will spend time thinking about how to be kind to ourselves, to our environment, to animals, and to one another. We will get to experience meaningful words through compliments and feel the joy that comes from showing appreciation to others. We will think about how people like Jackie Chan and Booker T. Washington and Maya Angelou teach us Kindness. It will be a powerful and positive time!
Here are some Kindness conversation starters you can use with your child at home:
-
What does Kindness look like in our home? What does it look like in our neighborhood? What does Kindness look like in our extended family, our faith or spiritual practices, our community centers, our sports teams, etc.?
-
Why is it important to show Kindness to people who aren’t kind to you?
-
What acts of Kindness have others shown you lately and how did you respond? How did it make you feel? How do random acts of Kindness help you grow?
Sincerely,
Julana Hardtke
A Message From the Office
If your child will be going home a different way than normal please communicate this to the office before 2:30pm.
We cannot make last minute changes, such as taking students out of bus lines due to busses running late, this causes a safety concern.
Birthday Treats
We have received questions regarding birthday treats. If you would like to send treats to school for your child they need to be store bought, individually wrapped and they will be eaten during lunch time.
A Message From the Health Room
It is vital to the success of our students that you keep your child home when sick. If a student is noted to be ill at school their guardian will be notified and the student will need to be promptly picked up.
Keep your child home when:

Schedule Information
-
The first day of school for grades 1-5 is Tuesday September 7th.
-
Kindergarten students will start the following week on September 10th.
-
Our school day is from 8:25-3:10 Tuesday-Fridays with Late Start Mondays 9:55-3:10. Students can be dropped off in the car drop off area starting at 8:08a.m. on regular days and 9:38 a.m. on late start Mondays.
Arrival/Dismissal Procedure
Liberty Ridge students can ride the bus to and from school (see information below) OR be dropped off and picked up by families in our car drop off lane. If you are going to be driving your child to and from school please see below:
-
When you drop your child off in the morning please pull into the drop off area which is the driveway to the right as you pull into the school.
-
Please make sure your child stays in the car until a staff member opens the door to welcome them, this helps us to keep all students safe. We will begin opening car doors at 8:08 a.m.
-
When you are picking your child up you will need to have your parent pick up ID card displayed on your vehicle’s rear view mirror. These are being mailed out today and should be in your mailbox soon! This will enable us to call for all of the children in your family at one time in an efficient manner, to get you in ,out and on your way as quickly and safely as possible.
-
For the first few weeks of school, we are asking that you attempt to stagger the time you arrive at LRE to pick up students. We are hoping once our system is up and running that you will not need to come as early, but for the first two weeks we encourage kindergarten parents to be in the pick up line at 2:55, first grade parents to arrive at the pick up line at 3:00 and second grade parents to arrive to the pick up line at 3:05. If you have students in multiple grades go ahead and arrive at the earlier time. Thanks for your help with this!
Bus Information
Due to a severe bus driver shortage, it’s highly likely that some bus routes will be affected to some degree on a daily basis. Any given route on any given day could experience a different bus number, earlier or later pick-up/drop-off times, and unfortunately the potential of no bus transportation at all.
Please note these important items that could affect your child:
-
Different buses: It’s possible your child will ride two different buses — one bus in the morning and a different one in the afternoon. This means a different bus number and a different bus driver.
-
Bus times: Pick-up and drop-off times could vary and may not always align exactly with school start and dismissal times. Because of the need to double-up on bus runs, your child could be picked up earlier or later than when school begins. Another possibility is that your child might need to wait (supervised) at school for a bus to pick them up. As soon as we know if your child’s route is affected, we will send a robocall to families with as much advance notice we can give.
-
No transportation: As a last resort, when no bus drivers are available, it’s possible we may not be able to provide bus transportation for some routes on any given day. We encourage families to have a back-up plan with an alternative way to get your child to school. This is a very unfortunate reality that will likely affect routes on a daily basis. If your child is unable to make it to school, it will be an excused absence. We will notify affected families as soon as we possibly can. We will continue to provide transportation for special education students who have special transportation in their IEP.
This bus driver shortage also affects:
-
Waivers: While a condition of waivers is that District transportation is not provided, we have made exceptions in the past if a bus is not full. This year, however, our buses will be full and we are unable to accommodate students on waivers. Families will need to provide their own transportation to and from school.
-
Bus passes: We are unable to allow students to ride a different bus when wanting to, for example, go home with a friend or be dropped off at a grandparent's house.
Bus lookup tool
The bus stop lookup tool to view their child’s route for the 2021-22 school year is live and updated. Please use the link above to access bus information.
COVID-19 Prevention Measures
-
Masks: Students, staff and visitors must wear masks indoors, except when eating and drinking. This applies regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. Masks are not required when outdoors regardless of vaccination status.
-
Attestations: Quarterly health attestations and daily temperature checks are no longer required. Families should continue to keep their child home if they are sick, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or have tested positive for COVID-19.
-
Physical distancing: In classrooms, students will maintain 3 feet of distance between each other to the degree possible. In common areas outside of the classroom, we will maximize opportunities to increase physical space and maximize distance between students to the degree possible.
Directory information withholdingParents and guardians may choose whether their child’s name, photos and other directory information is used in district and school publications (print and electronic), social media, websites, videos or by the news media.
If you would like to opt your child out, complete the Directory Information Withholding Form and return it to your child’s school. Please think carefully before restricting this information as your child’s name and photo cannot be included in yearbooks or be part of classroom, team or club photos.
If you complete the Directory Information Withholding Form, your child’s directory information will also not be disclosed to outside organizations, the military, institutions of higher education or used in any communication that could reach the public or media. Learn more about keeping directory information private.

School supplies for your student are already purchased and in their classroom, there is no need to bring any supplies with you. If you have any questions between now and “Meet the Teacher Night”, please reach out to us. Our office is open and happy to help with anything you might need.
